The Port of Montreal Tower, located in the Old Port, is set to become a must-see destination for the general public and Montreal tourism. Built at the southern end of the Alexandra Quay Marine Terminal, this uniquely shaped observation tower offers a breathtaking 360° view of the city, the river and the South Shore. The glass cage allows daring people to enter a volume of glass in projection of the north-east façade and to walk on a glass floor nearly 60m above the ground.

Sensitive hearts abstain!

The expertise of CPA (now under the aegis of ELEMA Experts-conseils) was put to good use first with the Provencher Roy team for the development of the preliminary concept and then with Vitreco to develop the engineering drawings, detail and supply the specialized parts for this element.

In order to offer maximum transparency and integration of this glass volume anchored to the steel frame through the curtain wall, an optimization of the components required the excellence of all those involved in each stage of the project, from its planning to the pre-assembled erection of the glass cage.

Principaux défis relevés :

  • Promote a structural approach of reduced loads on glass elements to minimize hardware and optimize transparency.
  • Teamwork, involving all disciples, is the key to the success of such projects.
  • A pre-assembly of the glass cage in the workshop allowed for a daring installation on site in winter conditions.
