Located on the outskirts of the Champ-de-Mars metro station, the Place des Montréalaises will become a real crossroads between downtown and Old Montreal. Two radically different topographies merge into a place of convergence. An inclined plane floats in the heart of the site and constitutes the determining movement to which the concept is anchored. This inclined plane will partially cover the Saint-Antoine ramp, one of the Ville-Marie expressway exits, and will link the Champ-de-Mars metro station to Old Montréal. The raised portion will be designed as a post-tensioned concrete slab due to the irregular geometry of the superstructure, as well as the architectural appearance of the slab intrados.

Principaux défis relevés :

  • Reduction of the impact of the new structure on the existing road tunnel in coordination with the Ministère des Transports du Québec (MTQ) by using a reinforced concrete foundation wall built on deep caisson-type foundations.
  • Use of a formwork and shoring system for the construction of the cast-in-place slab to allow road traffic on Saint-Antoine Street and the A-720 exit ramp during most of the work.
  • Design of a central column having an architectural shape and variable dimensions in plan and elevation optimized to maximize its resistance to vertical and horizontal loads (mainly resulting from seismic loading).  

Solutions et innovations dignes de mention :

  • Use of fibre concrete and composite reinforcement in the construction of the structural elements of the structure.
  • Use of an instrumentation system for the prestressing cables to ensure the monitoring of the actual stress in the cables, the potential for corrosion, as well as any risk of anomalies that may affect the structure.
  • Use of parametric design to generate thousands of solutions to identify the one that best meets the desired goals in engineering and in architectural form.
  • First known post-tensioned concrete overpass to be designed using parametric technology.
